Anyone who wishes to stay with XP is looking for problems. I'll have a look at your other suggestions too. I can boot to the OEM installation CD, but the instant that it tries to boot from the hard drive, the computer immediately turns itself off. But the computer still freezes even if the antenna wire isn't plugged in.

I don't think the 64-bit build will work in Windows XP, which is a 32-bit operating system.

Before you reformat, try cleaning your computer. technically, that's a lot of b.s., since everyone who gets a home computer from them uses their computers for private and recreational purposes. i'm not familiar enough with how a motherboard looks to know if anything is abnormal. I've been given Dell machines for so long that I've gotten spoiled by having their "Hardware Diagnostic CD". What do you mean by hours?
