Microsoft had a KB2847346 hotfix that addressed issues that were similar to what I was experiencing. On the morning several updated need to be installed. Find the non-Microsoft shell extentions starting at the top of the list and right click on the shell extention and choose Disable Selected Items. After going crazy, this was rather easy.
I turned it back on and message said upadates would install next time your Pc is turned on. this worked for me. Try re-enabling it to its original setting and see if the problem returns.
